Smelt

I was reading an article in the St. John Valley Times about the new regulations on dipnet fishing for smelt and it brought back a lot of fond memories. When we were kids the limit on smelts was a gallon per individual, so every year during smelt fishing season our uncles would come and "borrow" my brothers and sisters and myself to take us out fishing. Since smelt fishing takes place in the middle of the night it meant we were up much later than we ever would have been allowed especially on a school night. The next night for supper we'd have a big fish fry with fresh smelt and that was pretty good too. Of course we had to have ployes with them. Ployes, fiddleheads, and smelts...now I'm getting hungry.
